A Heartfelt Reflection: My April Workshops with Senior Learners

A Heartfelt Reflection: My April Workshops with Senior Learners

April was an especially fulfilling month for me, as I had the privilege of conducting two workshops for a wonderful group of senior learners.

Both workshops — Healthy Ageing with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for Seniors and Seniors TCM Self-Care: Must Know for Your Body Constitution — were designed to empower participants with practical TCM self-care knowledge.

Each session reminded me why I love what I do.

A Learner Profile I Deeply Appreciate

This group of learners was aged 50 and above, highly educated, and most are bilingual in English and Chinese.

Their life experience — having “eaten more salt than I have eaten rice” as the Chinese saying goes — added so much depth to our discussions.

Many were already feeling the aches and pains that naturally come with ageing, and saw great relevance in learning how TCM self-care could support their health journey.

I appreciated the active engagement, the sharp questions, and the sincere discussions that unfolded across the two days.

It was not just a class — it felt like a community coming together to learn and support one another.

Making TCM Practical and Hands-On

TCM concepts can sometimes be dry if explained only through theory.
That’s why I designed both workshops to include plenty of hands-on activities.

We didn’t just talk about acupressure, food therapy, and exercise.
We practised locating acupoints together, explored food therapy examples that could easily be applied at home, and moved through simple exercises to reinforce learning.

Although there was no formal assessment, the true “test” was how confidently they could apply their new knowledge. Through countless practices, examples, and group sharing, many could already remember key acupoints and explain how they would use them in real-life situations.

Seeing their progress was incredibly heartwarming.

Meaningful Moments as a Trainer

There were so many little moments that made these workshops extra special for me.

One moment that touched me deeply was when a quiet couple, who had hardly spoken during class, came back from their lunch break and gifted me a snack. It was such a sweet and silent way of saying, “Thank you.”

Another highlight was watching a participant who was initially quite skeptical.
At the start, he seemed unsure about the effectiveness of TCM.
Yet by the second day, he was the first to answer group questions and even initiated thoughtful discussions.
Seeing his change in attitude and growing comfort with the group was a joy to witness.

I am also very thankful to the many learners who graciously agreed to record video testimonials.
Their kind words mean a lot to me and serve as beautiful encouragement to continue this meaningful work.

In Closing

To all the learners who joined me for these two workshops: Thank you.
I love you all.
I enjoyed myself just as much as you enjoyed the learning journey.

I sincerely hope to conduct more trainings for this special group in the future.
May we continue to embrace ageing gracefully, healthily, and joyfully — together.
